An early morning appointment. Benjamin Beilman (violin) and Andrew Tyson (piano) arrived at Collier County’s most northeast high school for a 9:00 am Master Class. The students were ready to play. It was a clearly a piece on which they had spent time. The two artists made several brief, pointed comments designed to strengthen their playing and then demonstrated by each playing his instrument. A piano student turned violin player asked Andrew how his fingers could glide so easily over the keys. He answered that the strength was more in his back and shoulders and so when striking a key, it was not so much the strength of the fingers but the power and reserve from his back. Similarly, Benjamin demonstrated some extended bow techniques to the young string players.
